Surprise ! Radio is not dead !

7 juillet 2009

radio-is-not-deadIt’s been years that we got used to seeing radio revenue decreasing, season after season. Well, it seems something is changing, and details about this change are very interesting.

It happens in France, a country with a very old radio tradition, and very powerful operators.
In 2009 Q1+Q2, for the first time in the last years, Radio revenue GREW in France !

Crisis ?

According to a Yacast study, the turnover for the first half of 2009 has reached 1,499 Billion Euros (yes, that’s only for Radio advertising in France, and for only half a year).
This means an increase of 5% comparing to the first half of 2008, but it’s still lower than the 2007 results. A big part of this positive result can be obtained thanks to an inrease in advertising budget from the Retailing sector.
During this period, 557.815 spots were played by French radios, increasing of 2 % comparing to 2008, but decreasing of the same 2% comparing to 2007.

Now, what’s VERY interesting is this : the big winners are TALK/NEWS/SPORT AM/FM radio networks : Europe 1 (+10%) and RMC (+19%)…

Well, maybe, after all, maybe music stations DO have a problem !

You can download in PDF the full study here (in French), and a short synthesis there (also in French).
