La radio numérique se moque de toi

Il est des contrées dans lesquelles les auditeurs sont moins chanceux que nous : ils ont la radio numérique ! Les Anglais, particulièrement, vivent un cauchemar quotidien pour essayer de capter leur station favorite, obligés qu’ils sont désormais d’utiliser le DAB. C’est devenu une telle gabegie que le consortium de la radio numérique a cru bon de produire un spot publicitaire pour dire « Hey! le numérique, c’est mieux que la FM, quand même, euh, eh, hein !« . Voici le script du spot :

“Ceci est une publicité pour la radio numérique DAB. Si vous m’écoutiez sur une radio conventionnelle … screeech, scrooooutch… analogique, vous pourriez très bien entendre des sons bizarres… screeeetch… scrooooutch… qui ruineraient le plaisir d’écouter votre programme favori… scrouiiitch… ce qui signifie que vous manqueriez le .. swiiiitzzzz swooooutz… mais avec une radio DAB, vous auriez le plaisir d’un son numérique clair et précis.«

On croit rêver. C’est tellement n’importe quoi… que le « BVP » anglais a été saisi par des auditeurs anglais furieux et a tout simplement du REFUSER le spot, arguant ainsi :

« Nous considérons que le slogan donne l’impression trompeuse que les auditeurs n’expérimenterons aucune interruption du signal numérique, ce qui n’est pas le cas.«

L’amusant, c’est que les zélotes du DAB – ayant omis de se laver le nez avant de vomir sur 50 ans de succès de la FM – font face depuis deux jours à un furieux retour de bâton de la part des auditeurs.

Lorsque quelque chose ne fonctionne pas chez vous, la dictature molle qui vous isole du reste du monde tend à vous donner honte pour votre non-fonctionnement domestique : ça doit être de votre faute. Mais lorsque vous découvrez sur le net que c’est la même chose pour tout le monde… le nuage de fumée s’estompe et la boîte de Pandore s’ouvre… C’est exactement ce qui s’est passé depuis deux jours sur internet ces jours-ci.

Lisons quelques réactions d’auditeurs :

I have a small non-portable DAB radio at home that plugs into my hi-fi. Sometimes during the day I recieve excellent recption. However, at other times the signal just completely dissapears. It almost always happens around 6-8pm, and randomly at other times of the day too. So anyone who claims that DAB doesn’t suffer from atmospheric related problems (rather than ones caused by the receiver itself moving) is dreaming.

I’ve really enjoyed using my portable digital radio, and the signal at my house seems good. However, when on the move (say when using it in the car) the signal is rubbish – presumably radios made specifically for cars are able to handle this? It also eats AA batteries, although with rechargables this is less of a problem.

I’m unable to receive radio 1 on my DAB and I live just outside Belfast ! FM it’s perfect.

Surely we can all agree. Radio 3’s wonderful wide dynamic range sounds a million times better in analogue. Like the demise of CRT TVs and vinyl HI-FI, digital takes us a step forward in convenience and 2 steps back in sound/picture quality. I’m not happy.

Digital radio « doesn’t get perfect reception ». Simply another of those evidenced-based statements which make you wonder why the UK is being railroaded into DAB-only transmissions…

DAB reception is patchy in my house. An external aerial fixed that for my main radio and I can now receive Edinburgh and Ayrshire multiplexes as well as the Glasgow multiplex I am supposed to receive. I notice my portable radio suffers from burbling when the microwave is switched on.

As with all A-D and then D-A converters, each step results in sampling and averaging, which throws away the full range of the orginal analogue sound. Just compare mp3 files created at 48 and 256 kps. Human ears deserve better than this.

La bonne nouvelle dans tout ça arrive de France : En plus de ses amis boxeurs thaïlandais, il semble que le ministre Mitterrand a aussi des amis anglais. Il repousse donc à la Saint Glin-Glin le dossier numérique. De la part de quelqu’un dont les initiales sont « FM »… this is bloody good news !

Pub radio 2009, le bilan

Yacast vient de publier son bilan publicitaire radiophonique pour l’année 2009 en France. C’est donc l’état de santé d’un média que l’on dit « mort » tous les 6 mois. Regardons un petit peu l’état du mort, en pleine période de crise :

Progression du chiffre d’affaire de la radio en général :
+9,8%, soit 3 246 M€ de recettes publicitaires.

Progression du nombre de messages diffusés :
+6,5% avec plus de 1,1 millions de spots diffusés.

Progression de la durée publicitaire :
+5,6% en 2009, soit plus de 8 520 heures de publicité diffusée.

Recul du nombre d’annonceurs actifs :
-1,3% vs 2008, soit 2 075 annonceurs.

Les 20 premiers annonceurs concentrent 33,1% du C.A. global Radio et enregistrent à eux seuls une hausse de leurs investissements de +19,3%. Autrement dit : ceux qui consomment le plus du media radio en consomment de plus en plus.

Moi, je dis : pas mal pour un média mort, et en pleine crise :-)

Radio advertising : even Google doesn’t believe in it anymore

While major radio networks are witnessing some 30% loss in advertising revenue, Google itself exits radio !

Yesterday, Susan Wojcicki, VP, Product Management, explained this move on Google’s « traditional media blog » :

(…) In 2006, we launched Google Audio Ads and Google Radio Automation to create a new revenue stream for broadcast radio, produce more relevant advertising for listeners and streamline the buying and selling of radio ads. While we’ve devoted substantial resources to developing these products and learned a lot along the way, we haven’t had the impact we hoped for.
So we have decided to exit the broadcast radio business and focus our efforts in online streaming audio. We will phase out the existing Google Audio Ads and AdSense for Audio products and plan to sell the Google Radio Automation business, the software that automates broadcast radio programming. Advertisers will continue to be able to use Google Audio Ads until May 31 and broadcasters will be able to publish inventory to Google until that date as well. We will work with partners to make sure that there is as little disruption to their business as possible and will work to find a buyer for the Google Radio Automation business.

This is not about the media. This is not about the content.

The main difference between music feeds and radio is not the absence of DJ, nor the absence of professional scheduling.

It is about permission. Permission to interrupt.

Advertising business model has been built for ages on interruption. Interrupted programs, interrupted flow of pages, advertising business never requested any permission from the end user.

Things changed with the web.

Do you know that most educated users will NEVER see those ads on your website ? They use adblockers. Those little plugins are available for free, constantly updated, and they simply block each and every banner, square or skycraper they detect. It’s just like those « no ads » stickers on your mailbox, except that it works :-)

An iPod is the same. A music feed (disorganized but instantely controlable) without any interruption.

How do we compete with that ?

Why you shouldn’t ALWAYS rely on technology :-))

To podcast or not to podcast. That is the question.

As usual, the answer is not simple. It all depends on your format, on your radio contents, and on the types of contents that you are ready to podcast.

Bear in mind that when someone is listening to one of your podcast, he CANNOT be listening to your station at the same time. That can be a problem, or not at all, depending on what you provide to your listeners. Let’s take three examples :

1. A pure CHR music station.
What does it have to podcast ? Approximately nothing. Maybe some countdown show ?
2. An adult music & news station.
What does it have to podcast ? Features from the morning show, some news bits (the last bulletin), etc.
3. A pure talk radio.
Should it podcast ? Sincerely : NO! A radio that RELIES on callers – callers make the content – let’s call it a user-generated-radio (!) should MAKE PEOPLE LISTEN LIVE ! That’s its core business.
