Jack Benny, ancester of today’s radio morning shows

Jack Benny (1894 – 1974) was a radio actor. The closest thing we could think of nowadays would be a morning show host. The working kind.

Benny became a national figure with The Jack Benny Program, a weekly radio show which ran from 1932 to 1948 on NBC and from 1949 to 1955 on CBS, and was consistently among the most highly rated programs during most of that run.

In those early days of radio, the airtime was owned by the sponsor, and Benny made a point of incorporating the commercials into the body of the show. Sometimes the sponsors were the butt of jokes, though Benny did not deploy this device as frequently as his friend and « rival » Fred Allen did at the time, or his cast member Phil Harris later did on his own successful radio sitcom.

Nevertheless, for many years Benny insisted in contract negotiations that his writers pen the sponsor’s commercial in the middle of the program (leaving the sponsor to provide the opening and closing spots) and the resulting ads were cleverly and wittily worked into the storyline of the show. For example, on one program, Don Wilson accidentally misread Lucky Strike’s slogan (« Be happy, go Lucky ») as « Be Lucky, go happy » prompting a story arc over several weeks that had Wilson afraid to show up at the studio for fear the sponsor would fire him. In fact, the show was not officially called The Jack Benny Program for many years; usually, the primary name of the show tied to the sponsor.

Benny’s first sponsor was Canada Dry Ginger Ale from 1932 to 1933. Later, Benny’s sponsors included Chevrolet from 1933 to 1934, General Tire in 1934, and Jell-O from 1934 to 1942. The Jell-O Program Starring Jack Benny was so successful in selling Jell-O, in fact, that General Foods could not manufacture it fast enough when sugar shortages arose in the early years of World War II, and the company had to stop advertising the popular dessert mix. General Foods switched the Benny program from Jell-O to Grape-Nuts from 1942 to 1944, and it became, naturally, The Grape Nuts Show Starring Jack Benny. Benny’s longest-running sponsor, however, was the American Tobacco Company’s Lucky Strike cigarettes, from 1944 to 1955, and it was during Lucky Strike’s sponsorship that the show became, at last, The Jack Benny Program once and for all.

So you produce TV trailers ?

I used to work at producing trailers for TF1. I was still young and wearing a pony tail :-) Ok, don’t laugh. Since then, I always kept looking with interest at those small products.

Think about Movie trailers. I know only three kinds of good movie trailers :

Those which show a compilation of the ONLY interesting parts of the movie. When you see the movie then, you think « allllright, everything was in the trailer ! » :-(
Those which carefully reflect the atmosphere of the movie, leaving enough to be guessed, thus creating a strong desire to watch the movie.
Those which are actually MUCH BETTER than the movie itself, not even reflecting what’s in the movie. More than trailers, then, they are pure advertising.

Here’s a very good example of that last category. This trailer is fantastic…and the movie sucked big time !

Now… back to television. TV trailers can also be very nice products. When I see masterworks like what I’m gonna show you now, the first person I think about is the actual BOSS of the TV Channel… Wow ! That person ACCEPTED the idea of such amazing productions, involving costs, creativity, etc.
Lucky are the people working with such a boss :-)

J’ai eu ces jours-ci d’intenses discussions philosophico-religieuses avec des proches sur les thèmes infinis et perturbants que sont : le destin, la liberté face à la prédestination, le « projet de Dieu » pour chacun face à notre liberté d’action, etc etc etc.

Ce blog n’est pas le lieu pour raconter ces échanges. Mais en revanche, il est parfait pour illustrer ce thème. Illustrons donc.

Erika Miklosa était une jeune athlète hongroise née en 1970. Elle pratiquait l’heptathlon quand un accident l’a condamnée à arrêter le sport. Sa vie telle qu’elle la concevait venait de prendre fin. Elle n’avait pas encore 16 ans. Désœuvrée, sans but, elle commença à chanter dans les mariages et autres fêtes familiales. Trois ans plus tard, à l’âge de 19 ans, elle devint la plus jeune chanteuse d’opéra jamais engagée par l’Opéra national de Hongrie.

Elle a chanté l’air de la Reine de la Nuit de la Flûte Enchantée plus de 300 fois… Elle parcourt aujourd’hui le monde d’opéras en théâtres, faisant l’admiration des foules.

Faites une pause. Arrêtez-vous… et regardez et écoutez la vidéo ci-dessous.

En écoutant les notes de Mozart… souvenez-vous que pour Erika, tout a commencé par un accident qui semblait ruiner tous ses espoirs.

L’inspiration et la motivation que nous cherchons pour nos métiers peuvent être dénichées dans d’autres activités… et plus particulièrement dans le sport.
En la matière, rares sont les occasions d’entendre un témoin des DEBUTS d’un sport. Le défrichage, pas encore de héros à imiter, un chemin à creuser, l’humilité ensuite devant le chemin parcouru par les successeurs…
Une vidéo un petit peu longue… riche en enseignements si vous y cherchez ce qu’il faut y chercher…
